+ What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?
Commonly referred to as ACT (pronounced as its spelt) is based on a set of principles to promote “psychological flexibility”. The research suggests that higher levels of psychological flexibility, the greater the quality of life. It’s defined as the ability to adapt to situations with openness, awareness, and focus, and to take effective action guided by your values.
The different components of the treatment assist in providing insight and awareness as well as new skills and perspectives into yourself in everyday life. As you increase your psychological flexibility you will be able to improve your effectiveness when handling difficult feelings, disrupt unhelpful thought processes, rise above self-limiting beliefs, engage and focus on what you are doing, and change behaviours so that you can build a better life.
